Remembering the Crocodile Hunter on Steve Irwin Day
November 2007
November 15, 2007 was celebrated as the first annual Steve Irwin Day. The celebrations were held at the Australia Zoo on the Sunshine Coast where thousands of Steve Irwin fans joined in the festivities. The event attracted the interest of millions of people worldwide via television and internet broadcasts.
The Wildlife Warrior Steve Irwin died last year on 4th September, when a stingray's barb pierced his chest while he was snorkeling at Batt Reef in North Queensland; He was only 44 years old.
The anniversary of Steve’s passing on 4th September has been reserved as a quiet, private day for the Irwin family. So it was decided that it would be appropriate to designate 15th November, following the anniversary, as a day for remembering the Crocodile Hunter and celebrating the many things Steve was passionate about - family, wildlife and fun.
Irwin family spokesman John Stainton sent out a message to all Australians encouraging them to take a day off for Steve and to do something in his memory. The celebrations for Steve Irwin Day at Australia Zoo included a concert featuring international stars, a surfing contest and a gold course challenge. All proceeds raised from these activities will go to Australia Zoo Wildlife Warriors Worldwide.
Mr. Stainton also expressed his hope that the event would one day become a public holiday in Australia, a special day when everybody would go out and plant trees or do something that Steve would have loved.
