The T5 has a more intense light - three times stronger - than the T8. The high output offers 12% UVB and 30% UVA. It produces naturally colours, but most importantly vitamin D3 which is essential for reptiles. In the wild reptiles synthesise their own  D3 from the UV component of sunlight.  D3 is essential for the  metabolism of dietary calcium. The reptile lamp should be positioned between 15 and 20cm above the reptile's head. As well as being stronger than the T8, the T5 tube is also slimmer and only one tube is needed to give plenty of light. We recommend using a T5 reflector so that all the light is focussed into the vivarium, rather than being wasted.
