Coco Substrates Help and Advice
Ideal for woodland or rainforest habitats
Coco substrate is an ideal substrate for burrowing species that live in a humid environment, due to the composition which allows for moisture to be retained well. Find well-known brands like HabiStat, Pro Rep and Exo Terra as well as our own brand coco substrate.
What are coco substrates?
Coco substrate is a hugely popular choice of substrate for many humid setups, and these come in a choice of loose soil or compact bricks. These substrates are ideal for use with a reservoir and drainage layer, especially if using in a bioactive setup. They often need to be mixed with water and form soil that is ideal for either high humidity enclosures or dry ones.
Why should I buy coco substrates?
A reptile’s environment is key to maintaining its health and longevity. A wide range of reptiles can be housed on coco substrates because they can be used dry, moist, or even wet. When kept damp, it will hold water and encourage natural humidity, ideal for species like Crested Geckos and Chameleons. If kept slightly drier, it's perfect for Royal Pythons to burrow and dig around in, giving them a wonderful natural habitat.
What are the main types of coco substrates?
Our coco substrates come in the form of loose soil or compact bricks and vary in size. Both can help recreate the forest floor. The Exo Terra Tropical Forest Floor is a multi-layer substrate that recreates the forest floor found in natural tropical forests. The top layer is primarily mosses and lichens, while the bottom layer is rich in organic matter, often leaves and wood that has decomposed.
What should I look for?
When choosing a substrate, you should look at the pet’s native habitat and the type of floor it is used to. It is also important to recognize the properties of each one because the clever use of the substrate can help overcome any weaknesses in your terrarium or vivarium setup.
