Sand Substrates Help and Advice

Mimic the natural sand found in deserts or savannahs

Sand substrates are the ideal material for replicating the desert reptile's natural environment, as well as creating a genuinely attractive environment in your vivarium. It also has a positive effect on your desert reptiles behaviour by encouraging digging and other natural behaviour. We carry a great selection of sand substrates from major brands, as well as our own premium range.

What are sand substrates?

Sand substrates are a favourite of many desert reptiles. They replicate their natural environment better than anything else, conduct heat well across the vivarium and help to keep the atmosphere inside the vivarium as dry and arid as possible.

Why should I buy sand substrates?

As desert reptiles evolved in an arid environment, choosing the right substrate helps to replicate their natural habitat. Sand substrates are suitable for arid reptile species and can also be used in aquatic setups for turtles. Sand is natural and an excellent heat conductor. It is able to give your reptiles the feel of digging, scavenging, and burrowing as they would do in the wild, which makes them happy and healthy.

What are the main types of sand substrates?

Our range of sand substrates includes both ordinary natural sand and soil mix sand, which is blended to recreate the soil that is found in arid regions and has a high clay content that allows the animals to dig burrows. Additionally, we have riverbed sand which mimics the softness and silt of a river bed. Providing soft, pliable material with which reptiles can dig into, it does not muddy up the water, making it an ideal substrate for semi-aquatic terrariums.

What should I look for?

While choosing a substrate, keep in mind your pet's native habitat and the type of floor they are used to. As well as knowing what each substrate does, it is equally important to understand how each substrate should be used for your terrarium or vivarium set up as effectively as possible.
