Tasty and tidy treats
Bioactive custodians are a fantastic group of animals beloved by reptile keepers everywhere for their ability to double as both a cleaner and food source. If suitable for an enclosure, bioactive custodians are a brilliant choice to promote a clean environment and stimulate your pet. In our bioactive custodian range, you’ll find a range of clean up crew species suitable to a variety of climates and reptile types.
What are bioactive custodians?
Bioactive custodians are a group of insects that naturally feed on waste matter and debris that build up in terrariums and vivariums, they are often also known as the ‘clean up crew’ by reptile keepers. They also make a great food source and hunting challenges for pets. When balanced properly, bioactive custodians will repopulate at a similar rate to being hunted, maintaining a good-sized colony.
Why should I buy bioactive custodians?
Bioactive custodians are both a food source and cleaners, they are a superb resource that any reptile keeper should use if they can. Most bioactive custodians require no extra food, although they can be given supplements to increase activity, making their upkeep costs minimal. Bioactive custodians are unlikely to cause any harm to your pet. We recommend adding a colony of bioactive custodians to an enclosure about two weeks before you add your pet to give them time to settle in and start breeding.
What are the main types of bioactive custodians for sale?
Our bioactive custodians range can be broken into the following groups; weevils, woodlice, isopods, springtails, earthworms and food. Weevils are very small beetles that will help to break down any waste. Woodlice come in a variety of sizes, so you can choose the size best suited to your pet and their environment. Isopods are very small crustaceans and include woodlice, they are a great source of calcium. Springtails are very small insects capable of launching themselves several centimetres in the air, making for a good hunting challenge. Earthworms are fairly hardy and fatty worms that make great custodians in soil-filled enclosures. Bioactive custodian food is designed to bolster a bioactive custodian colony and help them to become more active.
What should I look for?
Check that your bioactive custodians can be hunted by your pet and will be able to survive in the conditions of your terrarium or vivarium. We recommend installing multiple bioactive colonies in larger enclosures, especially if there are multiple animals.
