What are nightlight bulbs?

Unlike basking bulbs, which create maximum heat and light, nightlights are bulbs designed to generate much more heat than light. However, the light these bulbs produce has been found to still be quite distracting to many reptiles and can disrupt their sleep pattern or cause them stress. If you would like to try an alternative to nightlight bulbs you can buy a ceramic bulb instead, which gives off lots of heat but no light at all.

Why should I buy nightlight bulbs?

Nightlight bulbs are designed to be used when a basking bulb has been switched off to keep an enclosure warm. If your pet is comfortable with nightlight bulbs they are very useful as they can maintain a high heat quite easily. Nightlight bulbs tend to cost a little less than basking bulbs and use less electricity, however, they aren’t as efficient as ceramic bulbs, as the light they create still uses some power.

What are the main types of nightlight bulbs?

Most of the nightlight bulb range is divided by the amount of heat each bulb can produce, the fitting and the bulb’s colour. Nightlight bulbs can come in a lot of different colours, so you can try a few different varieties to find the one your pet is most comfortable with. The efficiency and wattage of your bulbs are key too as you will be running these for long periods and you may wish to reduce the impact they will have on your energy bills.

What should I look for?

When buying a nightlight bulb you must do as much research as possible to choose the right heat and light type for your reptile. You will also need to invest in a light fitting to hold your nightlight bulb. As with all heating elements, we recommend attaching the fitting to a thermostat to protect your pet from overheating.
