Phantasmals are diurnally active and will make use of all enclosure space, so make interesting pets to watch during the day. They are also able to be kept in small groups being a little less territorial than some other dart frog species, although adequate escape is still essential. To achieve this, we suggest an enclosure that is a minimum of 60 x 45 x 45cm (for a group) built up with plenty of places to hide, climb and escape company as well as gain adequate individual access to food, heat and light.
Dart frogs are not tolerant when it comes to heat so would only require a warm area with temperatures at a maximum of 24°C with a cool area of 15-18°C. Monitoring of the temperature with digital thermometers is essential as well as ensuring any heat source used is attached to the relevant thermostat. A heat mat is a good option when considering these low temperatures. The night time temperatures can drop as low as 15°C or even under and so may not require any extra heating. Despite this species spending most of its time on the forest floor or hiding in the dense leaves and moss, it is likely they would still be exposed to some UV, so providing this in your enclosure will boost your frogs health and help create a natural environment as well as creating a natural day-night cycle. A good UV source to use is Arcadia's 7% ShadeDweller (25-40cm away) which will need changing every 12 months as after this time the UV will fade but the light will still be glowing (lifespan is bulb dependent).
The humidity should sit between 70-80% most of the time which can be reached with regular spraying, foggers and small water sources. Humidity can be monitored with a good quality digital hygrometer. Any water going into your terrarium needs to be dechlorinated, as chlorine can cause the frogs skin to dry out and can cause long lasting damage. Dart frogs are not great swimmers as they do not have webbed feet, so shallow dishes should be used. Moss, a good substrate mix (such as coco soil or other earthy substrates) and lots of plants can also help maintain the level of humidity as well as creating a natural setting. Additionally, as the frogs feet can be relatively sensitive, it would be a good idea to include a good layer of leaf litter to prevent prolonged exposure to wet boggy soil along with logs, rocks and foliage for your frogs to climb up also providing plenty of hiding places, climbing opportunity and good challenge and enrichment.
These Frogs are insectivores and will only feed on feeder insects such as spring tails, and fruit flies. Gut loading as well as dusting with good quality calcium, D3 and multivitamin supplements in the relevant regime will ensure the frogs receive all required nutrients from the live food to remain healthy. Vitamin A is an additional supplement for frogs and will play a big part in vision, skin health and tissue growth, relevant to a species that can be prone to neurological issues.
