Do Voracious four clawed geckos make good pets?

Voracious four clawed geckos or Voracious dtella are a fairly large gecko species native to Papua New Guinea, Fiji and Tonga, where they inhabit the densely vegetated rainforests. They can be a little jumpy particularly when they are young, but will usually tame down easily enough and will tolerate handling.

All of the Voracious four clawed geckos for sale at Swell Reptiles were captive bred in the UK, which means the risk of them carrying parasites or diseases is next to none, and you can feel safe in the knowledge that getting your new pet had minimal impact on their natural environment and population.

If you are looking for an alternative to the Voracious four clawed gecko, we recommend looking into Crested Geckos.

What size enclosure does a Voracious four clawed gecko need?

As they are one of the larger species of gecko, Voracious four claws require a good-sized enclosure to roam around. They also have high humidity requirements, which means wooden vivariums are not the best option, instead, glass or PVC enclosures that can handle the consistent moisture without becoming damaged work better.

We recommend a minimum enclosure size of 90 x 45 x 90cm (36 x 18 x 36”) for an adult Voracious four clawed gecko, which makes the Exo Terra Glass Terrarium 90x45x90cm a great option.

Do Voracious four clawed geckos need to be heated?

During the hot summer months or in particularly warm homes, additional heat sources may not be required, but to ensure the temperatures stay consistent it is always worth having a heat source set to the correct temperature on a thermostat. If the heat is not needed, the thermostat will keep the heat source switched off until it is required.

The ideal basking temperature for a Voracious four clawed gecko is around 27°C (80°F), with a cooler forest floor sitting between 20-24°C (68-75°F). This will ensure they are able to properly thermoregulate and remain healthy.

The best way to achieve this gradient is using an overhead heating system such as a basking lamp and dimming thermostat, or a ceramic heat emitter and pulse thermostat suspended over the mesh top of the enclosure.

Do Voracious four clawed geckos need UV?

Voracious four clawed geckos are crepuscular, meaning they are the most active during dawn and dusk where they would be exposed to low levels of UVB. Their captive environment should replicate this, giving them a UVI between 1-2.

This can be achieved using the Arcadia ShadeDweller ProT5 Kit which was produced specifically with crepuscular animals in mind, placed between 25-40cm (10-15”) above the highest basking point, or if this distance will need to be greater, but no greater than 45cm (18”), an Arcadia ProT5 Kit - Forest 6% works better.

How do I decorate a Voracious four clawed gecko’s vivarium?

The first thing to consider when kitting out your Voracious for clawed geckos enclosure is whether you will want to add live plants and go bioactive, or whether you would prefer to stick to artificial decor and artificial plants. If you do not wish to add live plants, a deep layer of coco soil or similar will suffice for your substrate layer.

If you are creating a bioactive set-up, a drainage layer of Hydro Rocks and Hydro Matting is recommended, before adding the substrate, which should be chosen to suit live plants such as Arcadia EarthMix or ProRep Bio Life Forest.

Once you have your foundations in, you should add lots of climbing areas using branches and vines so that your gecko can utilise all of the vertical space in their enclosure, also using foliage to provide covered areas up and down the enclosure so that your gecko feels safe and secure.

What do Voracious four clawed geckos eat?

Voracious four clawed geckos are omnivorous and should be fed a diet similar to that of the New Caledonian geckos such as Crested geckos or Leachies. This should be made up of pre-formulated gecko diets such as Repashy or Pangea, livefoods and fresh fruits.

All livefoods offered to a Voracious four clawed gecko should be dusted with supplements according to a schedule. At Swell Reptiles, we recommend using a calcium-rich multivitamin on every feed, such as Arcadia EarthPro-A, a calcium plus magnesium supplement on every fourth feed, such as Arcadia CalciumPro Mg and finally, a vitamin D3 supplement on every eighth feed such as Arcadia EarthPro RevitaliseD3.
