Pet Reptiles

When many people think of pets, they normally consider the more traditional, furry variety such as dogs, cats, hamsters, and even mice. However, many people have found that keeping exotic pets such as reptiles can be just as rewarding; if not more so.

snakeFor those looking to adopt a reptile as a pet, there is usually a fascination with the reptile species driving their needs to have a reptile as a pet. It is always important to thoroughly research the breed that you are considering and make sure that you are ready and able to take on the large responsibility that comes with keeping these cold-blooded creatures in your home.

One of the most common reptilian pets is the snake. Whilst local laws vary, many towns and cities allow non-venomous snakes to be kept as long as the owner follows stipulations on the care and containment of the animal. It is important that you check your local laws before keeping one as a pet. Snakes can be quite tame to handle when raised properly and some owners even swear by the notion that they do show affection after being raised in the home. However, snakes require a great deal of care and upkeep in order to remain healthy and happy. Ensure that the snake’s cage is tightly secured, as any weak spot in the lid is liable to become a means of escape. Snakes can be very persistent in attempting to escape an enclosure. It is not recommended to try to keep a wild snake as the stress of being contained and handled can be harmful to their health, always get your new reptilian pet from a recognised pet store or RSPCA centre.

Another common reptile that is owned as a pet is the iguana. Iguanas are fascinating creatures that have been popularised in recent years as pets due to movies and television shows where actors have kept tame iguanas. They can be quite tame and can be great pets as long as the owner is diligent in feeding them properly and maintaining a healthy environment. Iguanas need ample space in the form of a cage to explore and lay around in. They also appreciate a warming rock and a diet of crickets as well as other small insects. Iguanas must also be groomed in order to prevent infection and sores developing; most grooming (such as trimming claws) can be done at home but some grooming will require a visit to your local vet.

Even many reptile owners don’t think of frogs as pets but there are quite a few breeds that can be raised and kept indoors. What comes as a surprise to many is just how long they live; some frog species can live for 15 years or even more with care. Frogs can be sensitive to accumulated waste and debris in their habitat so constant, diligent care is needed to maintain a healthy environment as well.

These are just a few of the common reptiles that can be kept as pets. Each species and even breed of reptile requires differing methods of care but can prove to be a great companion in your home as long as you maintain a healthy responsibility in caring for them.
