Help and advice on shopping for: Reptile Disinfectants

Protect your reptile from bacteria and viruses

Many reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates come from other continents where they are rarely exposed to the bacteria and viruses found in the UK. To help protect your pet from harmful bacteria and viruses we have created a range of pet-friendly disinfectants from leading manufacturers like Exo Terra and Zoo Med.

What are disinfectants?

Disinfectants are chemicals that get rid of bacteria and viruses that linger on surfaces. There are a lot of ways for bacteria and viruses to get into an enclosure and make an animal sick. To reduce the chance of animal sickness, you can use disinfectant on anything that goes into the enclosure, except for food and drinking water. These disinfectants are safe to use around most animals and so you can even use them while your animal is in their enclosure.

Why should I buy disinfectants?

Disinfectants reduce the risk of disease in your reptile, amphibian or invertebrate. Most are fairly cheap and easy to use, generally coming in some sort of squirt bottle or wipe. They can also be used in places where livefood or waste has been to ensure it is clean for your reptile.

What are the main types of disinfectants?

Each disinfectant is made from a slightly different formula and does a specific job. Most of the disinfectants in this range can be used to clean a whole tank but manufacturers will have made them in different ways to smell nice or kill particular bacteria. The job the disinfectant does is often to do with if it is in a squirt bottle or a wipe as squirt bottles are used on most of the things in an enclosure while wipes are used on the enclosure itself.

What should I look for?

When buying a disinfectant it comes down to personal preference and how often you want to clean. Most reptile keepers try a few different disinfectants at first and then settle on one that both they and their animals can agree on.
