Help and advice on shopping for: Skink Supplies

What is a skink?

A skink is a type of lizard known for its smooth skin, often colourful tongue, and short, stumpy limbs. There are more than 1,500 species of skinks found across the world, making them one of the most diverse families of lizards. They typically live in tropical and temperate areas with lots of sandy ground that they can burrow into.

What kind of skinks can be kept as pets?

There are many different types of skinks that make fantastic pets. Fire skinks and pink tongue skinks are some of the most popular and have relatively easy care requirements, making them great choices for first-time skink keepers. Red eye crocodile skinks are another popular variety, loved for their unique, scaly appearance and interesting hunting behaviours. Make sure you thoroughly research the type of skink you want to keep before you bring it home!

How do you care for a skink?

No two types of skinks are the same, but most have similar care requirements. They fare best in long vivariums with sandy substrates and lots of hiding places in the form of caves and foliage from live plants or artificial plants. They also require UVB lighting and some form of misting system to keep humidity levels between 60% and 80%. Like all reptiles, they need to be fed a balanced and nutritious diet too. Most skinks accept live insects, like crickets, as well as some vegetables and fruits.
