Help and advice on shopping for: Reptile Heat Bulbs

Keep your pet toasty and warm

Heat bulbs are the most commonly used method of reptile heating as they are lost cost and allow reptile keepers to see exactly where heat is focused and easily alter it. Our heat bulbs range features products from many leading reptile brands like Arcadia, Exo Terra and Komodo.

What are heat bulbs?

You’ve probably noticed that most light bulbs produce some heat, however heat bulbs are designed to produce as much heat as possible. There are a lot of different types of heat bulbs but they are all used to heat your reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates. These lights take up the role the sun would play in the wild, warming up the cold blood of your reptiles to help power their biological processes.

Why should I buy heat bulbs?

Heat bulbs are a great purchase for a reptile keeper as they allow you to see when your heating is on and where it is focused. It’s important to note that these bulbs shouldn’t be used constantly, as the light will disturb an animal’s sleeping patterns - it’s best to swap the bulb out for a ceramic heater at night if your enclosure still needs to be kept warm. Heat bulbs are also inexpensive to run and generally take about the same amount of power as a regular light bulb.

What are the main types of heat bulbs?

There are a lot of different types of heat bulbs but the important things to look out for are fittings, wattage and the heat a bulb produces. The fitting of a bulb will determine the sort of lamp, canopy or fixture it is compatible with. Wattage is a measure of the power of a bulb, a bulb must be paired with a lamp, canopy or fixture of the same wattage to work. The heat a bulb produces is important because you need to find a bulb that creates the right heat for your pet, too much and your pet will overheat, too little and your pet will become cold and stressed.

What should I look for?

Heat bulbs are rarely bought alone unless it is to replace another heat bulb. Heat bulbs need to be paired with a fixture and a dimming thermostat to power them and protect your pet from overheating. When choosing a heat bulb keep your pet’s needs in mind, as long as you can keep their temperature at the right level they will thrive.
