What is a snake?

A snake is a type of reptile known for its elongated, limbless body, forked tongue, and cold-bloodedness. There are more than 3,000 species of snake and they’re found on all continents but Antarctica. A lot of snakes are feared for their venomous bites, but did you know that only 600 species (20%) are actually venomous? And of those, most aren’t dangerous to humans.

What snakes make good pets?

While the vast majority of snakes aren’t dangerous to humans, a lot of them just aren’t suitable for keeping as pets. For example, the largest species of snake in the world, the green anaconda, grows to colossal lengths of 6m! Unfortunately, we don’t stock vivariums for snakes that large…

That said, there are many types of snakes that make fantastic pets, such as Boas, Corn Snakes, Milk Snakes, Hognose Snakes, and Pythons. Corn Snakes and Milk Snakes stay relatively small and, as a result, are great choices for beginners, while Boas and Pythons can grow quite large, making them a rewarding challenge for more experienced snake keepers. It’s a good idea to do lots of research prior to purchasing a snake and pick a type that best suits you and the space/environment you can offer.

What do snakes eat?

All snakes are carnivorous, meaning their diets are made up almost exclusively of meat. Depending on their size, snakes eat anything from insects and eggs to birds, rodents, and even other reptiles.
