Help and advice on shopping for: Snake Lights

What kind of lights do snakes need?

Just like other reptiles, snakes need to be kept under special reptile lights to encourage their natural behaviours and, in turn, stay healthy. The best kinds of lights for snakes are heat lights, such as heat bulbs/heat lamps. It’s recommended that you put two separate heat lights in your snake’s enclosure – a daytime heat light (emits white light) and a nighttime heat light (emits red or purple light). These heat lights can then be put on 12 hour cycles to simulate natural day/night cycles. By doing this, you’ll stop your pet snake from becoming stressed or lethargic.

What is UVB light and is it important for snakes?

UVB light is a type of light that allows reptiles to synthesise vitamin D3, which helps them to absorb calcium. Not all types of snakes require a dedicated source of UVB light, but all will benefit from having one in their enclosure as they’ve been proven to increase their activity and enhance their colouration. If you do choose to add a UVB light to your snake’s enclosure, make sure that your snake cannot get within 30cm of the bulb and do not keep it on for more than 12 hours a day.

Should I turn off my snake’s lights at night?

It’s important that your pet snake is kept in an environment with a consistent day/night cycle. If they’re not, then they may become stressed and/or lethargic, lose their appetite, and even develop a disease. For this reason, it’s recommended that your turn off your snake’s daylight heat light at nighttime. If you have a nocturnal species of snake, such as a ball python/royal python, then it’s a good idea to switch to a heat light that emits red or purple light at nighttime.
