What is an amphibian?
An amphibian is a type of animal that starts its life water before moving onto land as it grows older, losing its gills and growing lungs as it does so. There are more than 8,200 species of amphibians found across the world and all of them share the same, defining feature – smooth, moist skin. They’re also cold-blooded and typically live near water in order to lay their eggs.
Is an axolotl an amphibian?
Yes, an axolotl is a type of amphibian native to a large lake just outside of Mexico City, Mexico. They look a lot like their close relatives salamanders, but instead of growing up, losing their gills, and moving onto land, like salamanders do, axolotls stay in water and remain in their ‘larval’ state for their entire lives. In the wild, axolotls are critically endangered with fewer than 1,000 individuals left. They’re widespread in the pet industry, however, and are available in many different colour morphs, including pink, gold, green, and copper varieties.
What amphibians make good pets?
There are lots of different types of amphibians that make great pets. Axolotls are some of the most popular, due to their relatively simple care requirements and the fact that they can be kept in unheated aquariums. Dart frogs are also great for beginners, and several can be kept together in the same compact terrarium. Pacman frogs and Tomato frogs are larger than dart frogs and do better in their own, individual set-ups, but they too are fantastic choices for first-time amphibian keepers. Always do your research prior to purchasing any amphibian!
