What is the best heating method for snakes?
The best types of heaters for snake enclosures are those that can be mounted overhead and used to create a thermogradient throughout the enclosure/vivarium. There are two main types of overhead heating elements: heat bulbs/heat lamps and ceramic heat emitters. As well as emitting heat, heat bulbs also give off light, so they should only be used during the day, as to not disturb your snake’s day/night cycle. On the other hand, ceramic heat emitters don’t emit any light and can therefore be used throughout the day and night.

How do I know if my snake is warm enough?
There are several signs to look out for if your pet snake is too cold. They may curl up in an effort to conserve heat, they may lose their appetite and refuse food, they may feel cold to the touch, and some species may even shiver. If you notice any one of these signs, then you need to act right away and turn up the heat inside your pet snake’s enclosure. Most types of pet snakes, such as corn snakes and pythons, need basking temperatures of 30–35°C. To maintain these temperatures, make sure you have a quality thermostat.
Are heat mats suitable for snakes?
While heat mats are suitable for snakes, they’re not the most effective or efficient way to heat your snake’s enclosure. This is because they produce a weak form of heat that only warms up the immediate area around them. They’re best used as a secondary heat source to supplement your main heat source or provide some extra warmth overnight when your main heat source is switched off. The best types of heaters for snake enclosures, or snake vivariums, are heat bulbs and ceramic heat emitters.
