Help and advice on shopping for: Reptile Basking Bulbs

Create the perfect hot spot

Most reptile species, like Bearded dragons, need a part of their enclosure with plenty of heat and UVB to recreate the beating sun found in deserts and jungles. Our range of basking bulbs is packed full of bulbs that create heat spots while warming the rest of your enclosure, including products from Pro Rep, Zoo Med and Komodo.

What are basking bulbs?

Basking bulbs are bulbs designed to produce a lot of heat and light concentrated in one area to recreate the effect of lying out in the sun. As reptiles are cold-blooded, many use basking behaviour to soak up heat, which they need to power several biological processes. Basking bulbs create the perfect area for reptiles to bask in while helping to heat the rest of their enclosure to the right temperature.

Why should I buy basking bulbs?

Basking bulbs are an important part of any reptile enclosure and should be replaced as quickly as possible if they go out. Basking bulbs help to recreate the high heat your reptile is used to, keeping them healthy, happy and stimulated. Without the right levels of heat, your reptiles can suffer as their metabolism slows down.

What are the main types of basking bulbs?

There are a lot of different types of basking bulbs designed to produce different levels of light and heat. You will need to carefully select the right basking bulb for your terrarium and ensure that it has the right fitting to screw into. It’s worth looking at the energy efficiency and wattage of each basking bulb you buy, as you will need to run it for long periods of time and must be prepared for the effect it will have on your energy bills.

What should I look for?

Along with choosing the right basking bulb, you will need to consider the fitting for your basking bulb and some way to manage the temperature of your enclosure at different times to create a day-night cycle. We recommend using a thermostat to maintain the right temperature but you can also use a thermometer and manually control the changes. As always we recommend doing plenty of research to ensure that the product you’re buying is right for your pet before you make a purchase.
