Help and advice on shopping for: Livestock

The start of a beautiful friendship

While we sell all of the hardware, food and housing needed to own reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates, they don’t come to life until you pair them with the exotic pet itself. Unfortunately, we don’t sell live animals over the internet so in this section, you’ll find the animals currently in temporary residence at Swell Reptiles, from beautiful Boas to loving Leopard geckos and cute Crested geckos, where you can purchase them in person.

What are exotic pets?

The term ‘exotic pet’ generally refers to any pet outside of the societal norm, including reptiles, amphibians, invertebrates and exotic mammals, such as Sugar gliders. At Swell Reptiles, we only work with reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates, like Dart frogs, Horsfield tortoise and Royal pythons. Many exotic pets have specialist care, but make extremely rewarding additions to the family with their interesting behavioural habits and often striking aesthetics.

Why should I buy a reptile, amphibian or invertebrate?

Owning a reptile, amphibian or invertebrate is a unique challenge that can be incredibly rewarding. Many of the species we sell, such as Ackie monitors, are capable of the same intelligence and loyalty found in mammalian pets with the bonus of uniqueness. Friends and family are often fascinated with exotic pets too, making them great additions to any home. Reptile keepers also enjoy the creativity involved in building an enclosure, learning what their exotic pet needs and creating an imaginative landscape reflecting upon their exotic pet’s native habitat.

What are the main types of exotic pet?

Our livestock breaks down into five areas; Lizards, Snakes, Chelonians, Amphibians and Invertebrates. Lizards are a huge group of reptiles including Chameleons, Geckos, Iguanas and Bearded Dragons. Snakes are another large group of limbless reptiles including Corn Snakes, Boas and Pythons. Chelonians are shelled reptiles and include Turtles, Tortoises and Terrapins. Amphibians are a different order of animals from reptiles and can live both on land and in water they include Frogs, Newts and Toads. Invertebrates are another order of animals made up of many creatures without a backbone including Tarantulas, Centipedes and Scorpions.

What should I look for when purchasing a reptile, amphibian or invertebrate?

When considering which exotic pet to purchase there are three things to consider; lifestyle, personal preference and budget. You must ensure that your lifestyle fits with the needs of the animal you’re intending to keep and that you can supply them with the amount of attention they need. Personal preference is a big factor as well, many of these pets live a decade or longer, so you must ensure that you won’t get bored of them five years from now. Finally, budget is a key factor, the running and keeping costs of many species can be quite high, you must consider whether you can afford the creature you’re about to buy. In all cases, we recommend doing plenty of research to ensure your certainty before purchasing with us.
