Help and advice on shopping for: Bearded Dragon Food

What do Bearded Dragons eat?

Bearded Dragons are omnivorous, meaning that their diets consist of both animal and plant matter. They’re not particularly picky when it comes to food and will readily accept a variety of live insects, such as crickets and mealworms, and plants, such as watercress, rocket, and cress. To make sure they get all the good stuff they need, it’s recommended that you supplement their diets with some calcium and multivitamins. These can be bought in powdered forms and simply sprinkled over Bearded Dragon food.

How often should I feed my Bearded Dragon?

Bearded Dragons should eat once or twice daily, particularly when they’re young and still growing. It’s important that you don’t feed your Bearded Dragon too much; as fully-grown adults they’re particularly prone to putting on weight and may become dangerously obese if overfed. A typical portion of food should contain several (~4-6) insects and some leafy greens. Some Bearded Dragon keepers only offer their beloved reptiles insects a couple of times a week, offering them just plants on non-insect days.

How long can Bearded Dragons go without food?

In the wild, Bearded Dragons can go several weeks without food, but this isn’t something that we should let them do in captivity! It’s important that your Bearded Dragon is offered food regularly, not only to ensure that they maintain a healthy weight, but also to offer them some much-needed enrichment. If you’re feeding live insects, your Bearded Dragon will eagerly chase them around its vivarium and, in doing so, hone its instinctive hunting behaviours.
