Corn x Pueblan milk snake, Pantherophis guttatus x Lampropeltis triangulum campbelli
The Corn x Pueblan milk snake is a hybrid species that is great for beginners
- Corn x Pueblan milk snakes make a very unique hybrid pet
- Easy care requirements, similar to that of the individual species
- Easy to tame making them a good choice for beginners
Do Corn x Pueblan milk snakes make good pets?
Both Corn snakes and Pueblan milk snakes are American colubrids and have practically identical husbandry requirements, which makes keeping a hybrid of these two species happy and healthy quite easy. This is a man-made hybrid, and no evidence can be found of them occurring naturally, making this a truly unique pet.
Morphology of this hybrid can be quite variable between individuals, but ours look closer to a Pueblan milk snake than they do a Corn snake. Being an artificially selected hybrid, any Corn x Pueblan milk snake for sale at Swell Reptiles will be captive bred in the UK, meaning you can rest assured that your new snake came from a reliable source.
What size vivarium do I need for a Corn x Pueblan milk snake?
Both Corn snakes and Pueblan milk snakes are very active species, so unsurprisingly, their hybrids are also particularly active and should be provided with plenty of space to roam and for enrichment. We recommend a minimum enclosure size of 120 x 60 x 60cm (4 x 2 x 2ft), for example, the VivExotic Repti-Home Bearded Dragon Vivarium Large.
Does my Corn x Pueblan milk snake need to be heated?
As with Corn and Pueblan milk snakes, the Corn x Pueblan milk snake must be provided with a thermogradient that runs from warm in one end of the enclosure, to cool in the other end to allow them to regulate their internal body temperature.
The ideal temperature range for this hybrid is the same as for the individual species, so a basking temperature between 30-32°C (86-86°F) and a cool end temperature of around 22°C (71°F).
Due to the larger enclosure size required, this should be achieved using an overhead heating element connected to a compatible thermostat, such as a basking lamp and dimming thermostat or ceramic heat emitter and pulse thermostat.
Do Corn x Pueblan milk snakes need UV?
Both Corn and Pueblan milk snakes do best with a UVI range of 2-3, so their hybrid should be kept within this same UVI range. This can be achieved using an Arcadia ShadeDweller T5 placed 25-40cm (10-15”) above the basking zone, or an Arcadia ProT5 Kit - Forest 6% placed 40-45cm (15-18”) above the basking zone.
What substrate does a Corn x Pueblan milk snake need?
Corn and Pueblan milk snakes are both arid species, with humidity requirements similar to that of the average UK household. Their substrate should, therefore, not hold too much moisture, but should be loose enough to provide the opportunity for burrowing. We recommend using either a soft chip reptile bedding, or a sand-soil mix such as Arcadia EarthMix Arid for bioactive set-ups.
How do I decorate a Corn x Pueblan milk snake’s vivarium?
At the very least, your Corn x Pueblan milk snake should be provided with a hiding area at each end of the enclosure, either in the form of a hiding cave or natural decor pieces, but more than two is much better. To provide enrichment, branches, tunnels and foliage either from real or artificial plants should also be provided throughout the length of the enclosure.
What do Corn x Pueblan milk snakes eat?
Both Corn and Pueblan milk snakes are carnivorous and should be fed on a staple diet of reptile frozen food, with mice being a better staple option than rats due to their lower fat content, as these are quite slender-bodied snakes, but rats are a good option to add variety.
