Help and advice on shopping for: Live Fruit Flies

A froggy favourite

Live flies are a staple of many animals’ diets in the wild, they are a fantastic food source as they quickly reach maturity and present a good hunting challenge. Our fruit flies range is designed to give you a continual stock of flies in culture to keep your reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates fed for longer.

What are live fruit flies?

Flies are a large group of insects made up of a few different species that all have similar traits. Generally, flies are a preferred live food source for amphibians, many of whom have a projectile tongue to capture their prey. We sell flies in culture as eggs, so that they hatch over time and develop at different rates to provide you with fresh live food for longer. Live flies are quite high in protein and make for a good diet staple, especially when mixed with vitamin and mineral supplements.

What are the benefits of buying fruit flies?

Fruit flies are extremely cheap, easy to maintain and encourage the natural hunting habits of many reptiles and amphibians, ensuring that they stay stimulated and stress-free. As our live flies come in a culture, they will last for weeks at a time by simply being kept at room temperature. They can be slightly noisy, depending on the species and a little hard to handle, particularly if they are capable of flight.

What are the main types of fruit flies for sale?

We sell four live flies products; curly wing flies, flightless fruit flies, fruit fly culture and fly feeders. Curly wing flies are small flies capable of flight that are suitable for smaller amphibians and lizards, we sell them both in culture and as live food, though they are not fruit flies they are often considered distant cousins. Flightless fruit flies are much bigger flies incapable of flight that are sold in culture. Fruit fly culture is the food used to supply fruit flies with all the vitamins and minerals your pet needs. Fly feeders are designed to hold fly eggs in culture and allow them to escape into your animal’s enclosures as they mature feeding your reptile over time.

What should I look for?

When buying live flies, ensure that you have a solution of storing them and keeping them from escaping into your home as they can become a pest if they escape. It’s important to also do a little research and check if your pet can eat fruit flies before going ahead with any purchase.
