Help and advice on shopping for: Rainforest Substrates

Recreate the rainforest floor

Rainforest reptiles require substrates that can tolerate high levels of moisture since they thrive in high-humidity environments. We carry a great selection of rainforest substrates from major brands, as well as our own premium range.

What are rainforest substrates?

Designed to mimic the forest floor, rainforest substrates collect moisture and subsequently release it back into the air. Since moisture can soften the ground, rainforest substrates are well suited for snakes to slither across or arboreal climbers to fall on. Reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates who enjoy humid, rainforest environments are well suited for the use of these substrates.

Why should I buy rainforest substrates?

As rainforest reptiles evolved in a highly moist and humid environment, with large amounts of rainfall on a daily basis, choosing the right substrate helps to replicate their natural habitat. Rainforest substrates tend to retain more moisture from humidity systems, releasing it slowly to maintain the damp feeling your reptile needs to thrive. Over time, they decay slowly and bind waste together for easy disposal. As long as there is adequate ventilation, this reduces the possibility of mold developing.

What are the main types of rainforest substrates?

Reptile keepers generally make flooring from coco soil, bark with husk and moss on top, or a combination of these substrates. Bark is a natural product made from fir trees, it absorbs moisture and creates humidity and your reptiles will also enjoy burrowing in this woody substrate. Coco substrate usually requires water for it to start and is specially designed for reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates that need a very moist habitat. Made from coconut husk, it holds many times its own weight in water and expands to form soft moist bedding. Bio Life and Earth Mix are also designed for live planting which is increasingly popular in rainforest set-ups.

What should I look for?

Consider the native habitat of your pet and the type of flooring they are used to when selecting a substrate. It's also important to recognise how each substrate works in order to be able to use it for your terrarium or vivarium setup as effectively as possible.
