Help and advice on shopping for: Tortoise Food
What should I feed my tortoise?
As vegetarians, tortoises should be fed a diet of exclusively plants. They enjoy a wide variety of different plants, from leafy green vegetables to fruits and even flowers/weeds that you may find in your garden. It’s important, however, that you thoroughly wash your plants before you offer them to your tortoise in order to remove any harmful substances like pesticides.
While tortoises get a lot of their nutrition from fresh plants, it’s also a good idea to supplement their diets with some specially prepared/formulated foods, like those made by Komodo. These foods contain high quantities of fibre, calcium, and phosphorous – things your tortoise needs to grow its shell and stay healthy. You can also find edible bedding that doubles up as a food source and bedding material, all in one!
How often should I feed my tortoise?
We recommend that you feed your tortoise at least once every day. You may choose to skip a day every week in order to make sure that your tortoise doesn’t put on too much weight but do try to offer them at least six feeds a week. If you have a young tortoise, we recommend that you split your daily portions of food in two and offer your tortoise some in the morning and some in the afternoon/evening. In the wild, a tortoise can go for weeks without food – but this isn’t something we should try to replicate in captivity!
