Help and advice on shopping for: Live Earthworms

A juicy treat

A rich and tasty treat, earthworms are a fantastic food for malnourished or ill reptiles as they are packed full of moisture and fat. While they shouldn’t form a staple of any reptiles diet they are a great choice as an occasional treat or to fatten up a skinny scaly - however, some amphibians, like Pacman Frogs, can eat earthworms as a staple food.

What are earthworms?

Earthworms are a collection of different worm species that can be used to feed reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates. Earthworms are generally very high in moisture, fat and protein, making them a great choice for any reptiles in need of gaining weight rapidly. They are completely harmless and present little challenge in hunting.

Why should I buy earthworms?

Most earthworms are extremely cheap to maintain, needing little in the way of food, except some soil and the occasional bit of fruit, which also makes them ideal bioactive custodians. They are packed full of fat and protein, so reptiles will absolutely love them. However, it’s important to limit the number of worms in your pet’s diet to ensure they don’t become too fat. Earthworms don’t hold many nutrients either so an earthworm feed should be supplemented with other live food or vitamins.

What are the main types of earthworms for sale?

We sell 3 types of earthworms; mini mealworms, small worms and giant lob worms. Mini mealworms are the smallest worms we offer, measuring between 10-15mm and are ideal for small reptiles. Small worms are mixed worms sized between 50-75mm and are great for lizards of all sizes. Giant lob worms are whoppers between 90-150mm in size, ideal for large lizards and amphibians.

What should I look for?

Check whether your pet’s species are able to eat worms before buying them, it’s important that you ensure that the live food you’re buying for your pet is suitable for them before making a purchase. We also recommend checking that you’ll have enough space to store the worms, especially if you’re planning to buy in bulk.
