What are the benefits of ProRep Bio Life Leaf Litter?
ProRep Bio Life Leaf Litter is an essential addition to replicate the litter layer that is found within a bioactive enclosure. The leaf litter not only provides security, but also helps to maintain the humidity and moisture in both the atmosphere and the substrate, and will also provide the environment with beneficial bacteria, fungi and custodian insects such as springtails and woodlice that play an important role in a bioactive enclosure. This leaf litter also breaks down and will be consumed which provides food for your plant life.
How do I use ProRep Bio Life Leaf Litter?
The layer of ProRep Bio Life Leaf Litter in your enclosure should be at least 3-4cm deep, but can be far deeper if you prefer. In the natural habitats of these animals, the litter layer is usually at least 24-30cm. To create your litter layer, break up the leaf litter in your hands and then scatter these pieces on top of a suitable substrate to at least a 1cm depth. To keep this layer in place, give the whole surface a good spray with water. After this, you can add in a layer or unbroken leaf litter to the top. These two layers serve different purposes, the fine and broken up layer provides space for the custodians to hide, which prevents them from being consumed very quickly by any terrestrial inhabitants you may have. The unbroken layer of leaves will provide cover and a hiding place for your animals, allowing them to replicate their natural behaviors and shelter to prevent stress when required.
You should add a new layer of leaf litter at least every 4-6 months, or when you find the layer has broken down significantly or been consumed. Ideally, you would introduce a litter layer 3-4 weeks before adding your chosen species, but this process can be started with them already in the enclosure.
ProRep Bio Life Leaf Litter contains a mix of leaves from trees such as poplar, maple and birch. These leaves have been gathered from sustainable sources.
