Help and advice on shopping for: Reptile Lights

Recreate sunlight from around the world

Reptile Lighting is one of the most important aspects of reptile keeping. Whether to provide essential life-giving UVB to your reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates, or ensure there is adequate LED lighting for your live plants to thrive, having the right lights will make all the difference within your enclosure. In our reptile lighting range, you’ll find products from leading brands including Arcadia, Exo Terra and Reptile Systems.

What are reptile lights?

Reptile lights are specially designed light bulbs that not only produce light but some also create heat and UVB. In regular lights, these by-products are minimised but they are actually encouraged in reptile lights. Several different types of reptile lights produce these by-products in different amounts, depending on the type of reptile, amphibian or invertebrate they are designed to support.

Why should I buy reptile lights?

Reptile light produces light, UVB and heat, each of which has its own benefit. Light is very important to reptiles and the recreation of light from their native habitat can help to vastly improve their mood, reducing stress. UVB helps many reptiles and amphibians with multiple natural processes, including the synthesis of vitamin D3, it also improves their colouration. Heat is one of the most important products of reptile light as reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates are cold-blooded, so they must be warmed to ensure an optimum body temperature and prevent stress.

What are the main types of reptile lights?

Our reptile lights range is broken into eight categories; basking bulbs, nightlight bulbs, LED lights, mercury vapour bulbs, UV T5 bulbs, UV T8 bulbs, UV compact bulbs and UV kits. Basking bulbs create a warm spot in your enclosure with plenty of heat. Nightlight bulbs produce heat with less light, to keep an enclosure warm without disrupting the day-night cycles of your pets. LED lights are the most energy-efficient lights and are great for replicating specific lighting, however, they don’t produce heat or UVB. Mercury vapour bulbs create lots of heat and UVB, however, they cannot be thermostat controlled. UV T5 and T8 bulbs are large, neon-style, bulbs that produce lots of UVB - T5 bulbs are more modern and energy-efficient than T8 bulbs and fit into different light fittings. UV compact bulbs are small bulbs used in lamps and smaller terrariums or vivariums. Finally, UV kits are fittings for a UV lighting set-up that are designed to withstand high-heat exposure and are ready to run out of the box.

What should I look for?

The needs of your pet always come first when buying reptile lights, try to ensure you’ve done plenty of research and that you know exactly how much light, heat and UVB your pet needs. It’s also worth checking the compatibility of any product with the hardware you already have. Finally, we recommend looking at the energy usage of each product, as many of these will be running constantly and may incur a significant running cost.
