What is a Crested Gecko?
A Crested Gecko is type of lizard known for its large eyes, spiny ‘eyelashes’, and remarkable ability to climb vertical surfaces using the sticky pads on its hands and feet. Like other types of geckos equipped with sticky pads on their hands and feet, Crested Geckos are arboreal and spend all their lives high up in the canopies of dense rainforests. They measure ~25cm when fully grown and can be found in several different colour morphs, including dalmatian, cream, orange, pink, and red varieties.
What other types of arboreal geckos can be kept as pets?
Crested Geckos aren’t the only arboreal geckos that can be kept as pets. Gargoyle Geckos, Giant Day Geckos, Mourning Geckos, Lined Day Geckos, and Voracious Four-Clawed Geckos are just several more arboreal geckos that like to live in trees. These arboreal geckos really appreciate vivariums/terrariums that are taller than they are wide as they give them more space to climb and better simulate their natural, rainforest habitats. A lot of arboreal geckos are easy to care for, but it’s important you do your research prior to purchasing one!
What do Crested Geckos eat?
In the wild, Crested Geckos eat a variety of different foods, from soft fruits to insects and small amphibians. It’s recommended that you try to replicate this varied diet by offering them nutritious, pre-made gel foods like those from Repashy, as well as occasional insects, like mealworms. Other arboreal geckos will thrive on a similar diet, though depending on their size you may have to feed them more (or less) than a Crested Gecko, which typically need feeding every 2-3 days.
How long do Crested Geckos live for?
Like other geckos, including Leopard Geckos, Crested Geckos can live for 15 to 20 years provided they’re given proper care and housed in a comfortably sized terrarium equipped with suitable lighting and heating devices. To ensure that your Crested Gecko, or other arboreal gecko, lives a long and happy life, it’s important that you make accommodations for them before you bring them home from the shop.
