Help and advice on shopping for: Bearded Dragon Lights

What kind of light do Bearded Dragons need?

Like all reptiles, Bearded Dragons need UVA light and UVB light. Both of these rays are found in natural sunlight, but they differ in how they affect your beloved pets. UVA light helps regulate behaviours, such as feeding, mating, and other daily activities. UVB light, on the other hand, allows the synthesis of vitamin D3, which helps your Bearded Dragon absorb calcium and, in doing so, maintain their immune system.

What types of lights are best for Bearded Dragons?

As desert dwellers, Bearded Dragons are used to long and sustained exposure to UV rays. To simulate an intense, desert-like environment in an indoor enclosure, Bearded Dragon keepers use fluorescent bulbs and mercury vapour bulbs. These are popular choices as they give of varying levels of both UVA light and UVB light. They’re also available in several different outputs – the best for Bearded Dragons are those that say 10-12% UVB on their packaging.

Where should I put a light on a Bearded Dragon enclosure?

Before you purchase your light, you should think about how you’re going to fix it to your Bearded Dragon’s vivarium. Some lights come with mounts that allow them to be screwed into the hood/sides of your vivarium, while others don’t – it’s important that you check a product’s description to make sure it’s the right product for you. It’s recommended that you place your light ~30cm away from your Bearded Dragon’s basking spot and make sure that there’s nothing in between, e.g. decorations, branches, and/or plants.
